On my 50 birthday I had it all, caching, walking, good company and all this at the White Mountain.
Long before February we were thinking where to go and what to do at my special 50 birthday.
At the and we decided to go up to Alonia at Agios Ioannis, it is just after Anopolis, where the road ends and to have a good time while I am doing what I really like. To hike in gorges founding caches and ending at awesome beaches!
My birthday this year happened to be at Wednesday so Juktas (our daughter, Katica) didn’t go to school for 2 days and unfortunate a few friends of us couldn’t come because they had to work.
We left Heraklion at Tuesday evening. The drive till Alonia was nearly 3 hours. It is not so far, but the roads aren’t straight here in Crete. Renate and Peter (RenPet) also arrived this evening. We had a few rakis and left for early sleep.
The next morning we split in 3 different ways.
George (the other half of Omilos) left to take care of his special boxes in this area.” Balconies round”.
RenPet left for Loutro to check his caches which are on the E4 and write the special letter in the box for the E4 bonus cache. AND they found another spot for a new cache too.
We (Juktas and Me) got up a little bit early and started the hike to Agios Pavlos cache at the seaside. It’s long time that I wanted to visit this place. I saw so many photos of it. But it is a big decision. The hike is short but very steep. My knees aren’t the best anymore. I don’t like to go down because they get hurt and I don’t like to go up because it is hard. BUT I got a good partner for the hike, Juktas.
First Juktas found a cache at a nice old olive tree. This was at the beginning of the walk. On the way if you like you can get other 3 caches till the drop down starts.
Going down took us 3 hours till the cache at the fantastic Agios Pavlos byzantine church. It was more what I was expected. The path wasn’t so good so we couldn’t go faster. I hate paths with the rolling rocks. My feet never feel safe.
Juktas was a little bit afraid from the heights. It is high. In 2 km it is 500 meter different in elevation. But the scenery pays for all the effort and pain.
We had a picnic at the church and we were playing while we were resting on the beach. Unfortunately we couldn’t swim, the waves were huge. We could hear them from 300 meter above.
On the way back first we found the cache nearby. I am not sure if I wrote the E4 letter in. It is a shame. Never mind if someone plan to go there, I can give him a letter to write it for me for the bonus cache. I don’t think soon I can go back there.
We placed a new cache next to the crossroad. There is sure a special letter. Good hunt for it.
From there we started to climb up with a lot of stops. At one of the rests we saw a boat going to Agia Roumeli. I knew that the timetable what could work for us was yesterday. But we had an eye on the boat and after 10 minutes we saw it leaving from the end of Samaria gorge .I thought it would go to Paleochora. BUT NO!!!! It turned back to the East. It was going to Loutro or Chora Sfakion!!! What a pity. If we knew it we could walk 4 km more on the beach and reach Agia Roumeli easy. We could get a rest and we would miss the uphill.
It was a big lesson. Never trust the Cretan timetable. Always have a telephone number in your pocket.
We hiked uphill in almost two hours. It wasn’t so bad.
George and RenPet waited for us before the end so we didn’t have to hike the last 1.5 km. It was great. We drove to Alonia, downloaded the pictures and had a hot bath.
From that time we were waiting for our no cacher friends to arrive and to have a fantastic dinner and time together.
This is a poem of a friend of mine and I lkie to share it with you.
AN ODE TO ZSUZSA ON HER 50th BIRTHDAY
We’ve gathered together
In this mountain retreat,
with food, drinks and goats
And good friends complete.
To help in celebrating
our Zsuzsa’s big day,
as she joins us in our
decent into inevitable decay.
She came to this island
Many years gone by,
and made it her home
without ever questioning why.
Now her life is so full
and goes by in a flash,
as she climbs mountain to gorge
in search of her cache.
So let’s raise our glass
To Zsuzsa’s 5-0,
and to decades ahead
with many roads still to go.

I enjoyed my birthday very much. The pictures can tell almost everything.
